SOCIETY OF BROTHERLY LOVE

   After hearing today’s readings at Mass, after reading the Bp. Padewski pamphlet after Mass, let me broach an idea with you.  Early in our church Bp. Hodur organized a Society of Brotherly Love, which he described as having “no admission fees or monthly payments.  Its purpose is prayer [and] work in the Christian spirit of love …” (Hodur, p. 59)  As church we are continually asked to participate in charitable endeavours for the good of our neighbours.  I just received one for Safe Passage, which shelters victims of domestic violence.   We are asked to help with the Crop Walk, feeding the hungry, fundraising for St. Jude’s Hospital, the Meals on Wheels walk, etc.  And notice the two events listed below in the Bulletin.  Most of these we do not participate in as church because we don’t have the organization in place to respond.  Additionally, did you know that 50% of people under 30 do not count religion as very important in their lives?  For many of them it is because there is the appearance of a disconnect between what is preached in church and what is done by church.  So to those younger people, to my Confirmation class, to any of those who would like to see us put our faith to work in the community and for the community, I ask you to contact me about your interest.  I ask you to share this invitation with others, church or unchurched.  I have set aside time a week from Monday at 6:30pm IF we can get the Society of Brotherly Love off the ground here at Holy Name.  Let us hope that we can.
